Saga continues

Chithwati Chakit Chahun Disi Sita

Kahan Gayay Nripkisore Manu Chinta

Sita, while still out with her friends in the garden, suddenly looses sight of the two brothers, and starts wondering where they went. Where ever the fawn eyed princess casts her gaze, to look, white lotuses, rained from the sky. Upon being told to look behind the bush, for them, Sita beheld the two princes beauty as if by greed, later showing pleasure after finding some long lost treasure. As she stared, the functions of the eyes was gone, and the eyelids forgot to blink. Taking in the beauty of the moment, Sita 's love for Shri Ram made her body go limp as she just stood staring at the Lord, just like the Chakori bird stares at the autumnal moon. Soaking in his loveliness, Sita finally shut her eyelids, thus capturing the picture in her heart. All this, while her friends waited coyly, not wanting to disturb.

Soon, however, the two brothers emerged from behind a cascade of flowers, seeming as if, a set of clear moons, had come out from behind the clouds. With an aura of perfection, blue bodied with yellow attire, the two gallant princes were beautifully adorned with peacock feathers on their heads and bunches of flowers strewn on their clothes. Tulsi Das describes their facial and sartorial attributes and then says that, their are no words for the amazing beauty of the Lords and his brother's countenance. With beads of perspiration glistening on their brows, luster of earrings as big as pendants, string of pearls on their chest, necks as conch shells in spiral shape, arched eyebrows, curly hair, red limpid lotus eyes, firm chins, long noses, full cheeks, muscular arms looking like a baby elephant's trunk, the look was very enthralling to the soul, an incarnation of Cupid himself.

Beholding the dark coloured prince in yellow clothing, the jewel of the solar race, with a slender waist of a lion's, an embodiment of beauty and grace, Sita's girlfriends were floored!!!

The saga of the Lord Shri Ram and Sita's love and indescribable beauty has continued. I, have wondered, how often Tulsidas has touched this subject and continues to do so. Don't you think he wants us to understand the meaning of true beauty and true love? It is not only the outer beauty that he wants us to focus on, but he wants us to look inward, and find our inner self, that is inundated by His love and beauty. Be still for a few minutes today , look inward, then, you will have Ram Rajya! JAI HO!

The Egoic Mind

To attempt, to write about this ancient Hindu epic the Ramayana, or the Ram Charitra Manas by Tulsi Das is a daunting task. I have spent a long time reading, and then studying this tome for 30 years and then some. In this same time period I was also trying to discover myself. Their was this urge within me to find out what I was good at, and what was the purpose of my gift of life on this earth. The more I thought about it, the more confused I got. In many ways I would say, this journey of befuddlement, took me further away from the truth. I guess what I am saying here, is, that sometimes, truth stares you in the face but you are a million miles away and cannot see it. I will talk about my revelation in more detail another time. The point however, that I want to make is simply this. Even when one knows what to do with one's life and one starts making inroads, the mind still takes you in different directions.

In my recent wanderings of the mind, I did some readings and discovered that I have to harness the thought process and not keep listening to the ramblings of the mind. For the mind loves to chatter, and keep one in the past or in the future. That is how it keeps us identified with our egos so that we cannot stay in the present and never discover our true selves. The ego gets it's feed and therefore inflation from the past. The present though, is where we can be, but, we live in it, for short periods, because, the ego cannot survive in it. Thus, the importance of the past, and the hope for the future, is, what we are constantly being fed by our minds.

In this battle between me and myself, I find, that, I have wandered away from the true calling of my Ram Rajya. Maybe, Lord Ram tests me from time to time, whether, I will ever finish this enormous task, of completing His saga, as I understand it, for the present times. I am no expert, the only thing going for me, is my love for this epic. I think, we can create a Ram Rajya today, just as it was in His reign.

So as the famous line in the Tao Te Ching " A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step" I will endeavour to sing the glories of Ram Rajya, to you my beautiful readers, one day at a time. We shall surely be in Ram Rajya then. JAI HO!!!!!!

Ram's First Glimps Of Sita

The clinking of her bangles, the tinkling of little bells, tied around the anklets and the waist, alerted Ram, as if Cupid himself was sounding his horns, to conquer the whole world. As He turned around to see, where the sound was coming from, He found Himself directly gazing into the beautiful limped eyes of Sita. So awe struck was He, that he kept on staring, His eyelids got stuck for a while. Actually, Nemi the God for the eyelids, was abashed, so he left his domain for a bit, giving Ram and Sita their privacy, so that they could have eye contact, with no barriers. Ram's ecstasy new no bounds. "The creator must have made her by his own hands, and was showing off his work of beauty, to the world", Ram said. Ram was dumbfounded by her charm and beauty, a beauty that was a beacon to all beauty. It was difficult for Ram to liken the beauty of the daughter of the king of Vedeha. It seamed that all illustrations of beauty done by poets in the past, could not do justice to hers at this time.

Thus, Ram totally enthralled by Sita, started reflecting his state, to his brother. Innocently He told him how Sita was none other than the daughter of the king of Janakpur, the bow-sacrifice was being held for her to find a suitor, and that she was going to the temple of Gauri. Further, he added, that her radiance had touched His naturally pure heart, that had quickened it's heartbeat and his right limbs were throbbing, which was a sign of upcoming good fortune." God only knows what He is doing, for men in the Raghukul (dynasty) never set their hearts on wayward courses". The Lord went on to explain to His brother, how He was very confident of His mind, which had never even dreamed of another man's wife." Their were very few men in this world who run away from battle, he said, cast a glance at another woman, or ever give alms to a beggar" He explained.

Even when Ram was confiding in His brother, His gaze was soaking in Sita's beauty, just like a bee was sucking in, the nectar of a lotus flower.

This segment of the 'Bal Khand' in the Ram Charitra Manas is quite profound. The Lord is showing feelings of His heart and revealing to us, the inherent inner beauty that we all have. Their is a lot to be said of love, and that is why, we shall keep talking about it a lot longer. Meanwhile, be in a state of Ram Rajya! JAI HO !

Sitas's Yearning

Tehi Avsar Sita Tehan Aaee

Add ImageGirija Pujan Janani Pathaee

While the brothers were gathering flowers, Sita arrived in that garden. She was sent by her mother to pray to the Goddess Girija. She was accompanied by her smart and lovely girl friends, who happily sang along. Besides the lake, stood a small alluring sacred temple, dedicated to the universal mother Girja. Sita, after taking a dip in the lake, prayed to the Goddess so that she would find a suitable husband. One of her friends, however, strayed away, where she chanced to have a glimpse of the two brothers. Seeing how overwhelmed she looked when she returned, all the girls were eager to know, what was the reason for her ecstasy.

She answered that, she had just seen two handsome and charming men, who were tender in age, one dark and the other fair. She said that, she could hardly describe the two, because suddenly, her speech had no sight and her eyes were mute. Then, the damsels started discussing the fact that, the whole city was enamoured by the two princess who had arrived with the sage Vishvamitra. They had apparently captivated the hearts of all the men and women, and, that is all everyone was talking about. They decided, that they all must see them. When, they saw the longing and restlessness in Sita's eyes, they quickly made their way in search of them. Sita followed suit, wondering if it was her old love that had been triggered off.

Sumiri Siya Naarad Vachan, Upjee Preet Puneet

Chakit Bilowkati Sakal Disi, Janu Sisu Mrigi Sabheeth

Remembering, what Narad Muni had told her and her family, about her marriage, her heart was filled with innocent love. With anxious furtive eyes, she gazed hither and thither, like a startled fawn, who had come upon something

Was Sita already falling in love? Was this moment, the answer to her prayers ? Who is she going to see next? We all want to know. However we shall see. For today though, feel the love that is burning in Sita's heart, then you will have RAM RAJYA. JAI HO!

The Celestial Garden Of Janakpur

For a couple of hours and late into the night, the sage Vishvamitra, narrated old legends to the boys, as they did their nightly devotional rituals. Then, as the sage retired to bed, the two brothers pressed his feet. That Lord and His brother, whose lotus feet are sought by men who have done immense sacrifice, are lovingly rubbing the feet of their Guru. Upon insisting, the Lord then, went to bed while the young brother caressed His feet, with much reverence and love. Only later, did the younger brother go to sleep.

The Lord of the universe and His brother woke up right before dawn, just before their guru. After doing their morning chores, and daily ritual of puja(devotion) they came to bow before the sage. Upon going to pick flowers, they discovered the radiant royal garden. Old nurtured trees stood resplendent with beautiful leaves and fresh fruit. Creepers blooming with flowers of different hues, were hanging from trellises. It seemed that nature in all its glory, had taken permanent residence in these gardens and was putting celestial beauty to shame. A serene lake in the center, had gem covered stairs, leading outwards. It's limped waters held colourful lotuses. With peacocks dancing, birds chirping and bees humming, it was truly a sight to behold. The Lord Himself, who delights one, along with his brother, were delighted at the beauty that lay in front of them.

Natural beauty truly soothes the soul.It is true, beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder, but when true beauty is mingled with the beauty that lies within, then we have Ram Rajya! JAI HO!

Janakpur's Love Affair

The women of Janakpur are abuzz with talks of how the dark complexioned older brother is most worthy of the hand, of the princess Janaki, in marriage. They discuss about how the king might not discard his vow, of the bow-sacrifice. They all sincerely hope that providence will take over, and the princess will get her due. One thing was certain, they all wanted to see these beautiful boys coming to their town again and again. If only they are so fortunate.

The people on the street wondered, how this young dark skinned lad, even though he is so suited for the princess, will be able to bend the bow. One said, that he only looks vulnerable, that he had heard, that the boy yields great power, and that by touching Ahilya, (I have already written about this story before) who had sinned, by hes feet, she had achieved salvation. Every one was of one view however. They wanted Sita the daughter of king Janak to marry Ram.

By now, the brothers arrived at the eastern part of the city. This is where the bow- sacrifice was to be held. In the spacious arena a pristine alter was erected, that was exquisitely adorned. Just like a boxing ring, this altar had raised platform seats all around it, that were made of gold, to seat the princes, who had been invited. Then, their was another higher level of seats, just like the bleachers, where the common folks would sit.. Close to the inner circle, their were brightly painted colourful galleries, where their were boxed in seating, for the women in rank, in the family.

All this sight -seeing tour was being given to the brothers by the children of the town. They eagerly swooned over the princes and led them from here to there . Lovingly, the brothers engaged with the children and showed awe and wonder at what they saw. The Lord who with his 'Maya' can produce several universes in the blink of an eye, was showing amusement and graciousness at the sight of this arena.

Realising it was pretty late the brothers returned to their Guru. The sublime Lord, who on a whim can inspire terror in terror itself, can on the other hand, manifest devotion too,. However the Lord was sacred of the Guru because they were late.

Very childlike, the Lord Shri Ram frolicked with the innocent children of Janakpur. Bring that inner child out today, and then you shall have Ram Rajya! JAI HO!

Ram, Lakshman - The Paramount Of Beauty

The two curly haired brothers had a beauty that was unparalleled. From head to toe, it was beauty as it should be.

The town folks upon hearing the news that the two princes were visiting, ran in droves to see them. Leaving whatever work they were doing, as if a fortune awaited them and their days of wretchedness were over. The gracefulness of the two brothers filled their hearts and their eyes had beheld a vision. The women however, witnessed the brothers' beauty by peaking through the tiny windows in their homes. Millions of cupids could not add up to their beauty, they told each other. No God, man, demon,
Naga, nor sage can compare to the beauty of the two princes they said to each other. Lord Vishnu has four arms, Bramha has four heads, and Shiva the slayer of the demon, Tripura wears some scary garbs and has five faces, they joked with their friends. No God can come even close to the beauty of Ram and Lakshman. The two boys are still of tender age and are the abode of beauty and bliss they discussed among themselves. Millions and a thousand more millions of cupids can be put to shame by only one of their limbs, the women observed.

The ladies asked each other if any human being can not be charmed by their beauty. One of them, informed them that, she had heard that these two boys, who were like a pair of beautiful birds, were the sons of King
Dasaratha. They had protected the sacrifice of the sage Kaushika. They have also slain many demons in the battlefield. He who is of wheatish complexion and has bewitching lotus like eyes, and who with his bow and arrow has squashed the pride of Mareech and Subahu is Ram, a fountain of bliss, and the son of Kaushilya. The other young lad, closely following behind with a bow and arrow, fair skinned and in gallant attire, is the son of Sumitra, the friend informed. Further more they are here for the bow sacrifice, after finishing the tasks of the great Brahmin sage Vishvamitra and redeeming Ahilya another sage's wife.

Ram
Rajya is a way of life, life which is very beautiful. Bring the beauty of Shri Ram and Lakshman, the two princes, in your daily lives and then you will have Ram Rajya. JAI HO!

Behold The Beauty Of Ram And Lakshman Now

Of and on, I branch off on matters that are dear to me, or subjects I think need to be addressed. However, the goal always remains the same: bringing Ram Rajya into our daily awareness. Our spiritual journey continues, in which, according to Eckhart Tolle, a spiritual teacher and writer, we have to leave the analytical mind and the false created self, the ego, behind. Even though it is a daunting task, it becomes simple, if we live in the now and work onwards from there.

Continuing with the saga of the Ram Charitra Manas, last, Shri Ram and brother Lakshman were in Janakpur with the sage Vishvamitra. King Janak had welcomed them and put them up in the best of accomodations. After having dinner, the night was still young and Lakshman had something in mind.

Lakhan Hridaya Lalasa Biseshi

Jaee Janakpur Aaeeya Dekhee

Lakshman was in no mood to turn in that early. He was wondering if he could go and explore the surroundings. Maybe, he could look around the capital Janakpur he thought, but was very reticent to ask of his brother, and on the other hand, was in awe of the sage.

The Lord sensed his brother's dilemma and decided to ask the seer's permission very respectfully. The sage was very pleased at Shri Ram's good manners. He told Him that He was the upholder of the moral code and that He brought glee to all of His devotees.

"Run along you happy pair, see the city and come back" said the sage," show your lovely countenance to the people and bless their eyes"

Touching the feet of the muni, the two brothers, a treat to the eyes of the whole world were off. Groups of boys started following them, all enamoured by the exquisite beauty of the two brothers. The two, were clad in yellow garments with sashes around their waists. A quiver was tied on their backs respectively, and each carried a bow and arrow in their hands. One dark and the other fair, they had streaks of sandalwood paste painted on their bodies so as to match their complexion. With long slender arms, necks, built as a lion's, they wore strings of pearls, got from the forehead of elephants. Their eyes resembled the red lotus, and their moon-like face, was enough to relieve one of any kind of tension. The ears were adorned with gold while the eyebrows were perfectly arched, with a sectarian tilak (mark) on the forehead. Casting a bewitching glance, the pair definitely stole every body's heart. They were beauty personified!!!!!

We can behold the beauty of the two brothers in this very moment. Just close your eyes and be very still. Go deep inside within you and do not listen to the chattering of the mind. Feel your presence in the now and then you will have Ram Rajya! JAI HO!!

Remembering Our Ancestors

This is the time of 'Pitra Paksha'(15 days devoted to our ancestors) in our Hindu calendar. Remembering our forefathers and paying homage to them, is very significant. Just as we have Thanksgiving every year, similarly I could relate these days as giving thanks to our parents and our grand parents who are the architects of our sojourn on this planet.

So today, I pay my respects and gratitude to my parents and my husband's parents who have passed on. They are always in my thoughts. As I have said before, I still maintain, that one should feel very fortunate when they have their parents in their lives. Their true worth is realized only when they are gone from this world. I truly wish they were around me now, so that I could enjoy their company and wisdom, and our children could be showered by their love and affection. I cherish my memories of them and feel forever blessed for being in our lives.

This Ram Rajya is ours to have now.It is certainly not a dream for the future or of the past. It is within us and ours to discover. For today though, just remember your ancestors and pay them a silent tribute and then you shall have Ram Rajya! Jai Ho!

The Power Of The Satya Narayan Katha

The word of the Lord Shri Ram, is what I set out to relay, yet again, to the world. I merrily went about this business, thinking, this task was a piece of cake. Little did I know, that, most of all, I would have to battle with my own mind. I literally succumbed to my own temptations. Summer, vacations, leisure time, procrastination, all did me in. As my determination waned, my daily habit of writing, went out the window and quickly, I fell behind. My conscience however, kept nagging me, but my will power eluded me.

Today, I plan to change all that. As, all good things come to an end, I want to proclaim that the cycle continues, and they can be begun again with greater fervour. So, I invoke the guidance of
Lord Ganesh, the remover of all obstacles, to assist me in my endeavour to renew Ram Rajya.

Last week, on
Purnima ( day of the full moon ) the family did the Satya Narayan Katha (story) with family and friends which brought great joy. It is said, that in Kalyug (the present age according to the Hindu calender) this katha can give salvation. Lord Vishnu told the sage Narad, about this, when he asked him, what should people do to eradicate their misery. This is what was revealed, when 84,000 rishis congregated in Naimisharanya, one of the holy places, in northern India.

So, from time to time, we, as a family decide to perform this
katha and share in the glory of the Lord. Ram Rajya is about sharing and celebrating the good fortune that we all have. This katha makes us aware, that with the little that we can do to remember the Lord, we in turn receive huge benefits.

Ram Rajya,
is my concept for the here and now. I firmly believe that those glory days, that came about after Shri Ram's coronation as the King of Ayodhya, are in our grasp. All we have to do, is the Satya Narayan Katha, and then we will have Ram Rajya! JAI HO!

The Path To Freedom

Yes, when you are in Ram Rajyau, you will experience total freedom. What else will you be, but free, when you have dropped all the cares in the world for the Lord to handle ? Ram Rajya is the rule, thus, their are no rules. People are free to do what they please. They, therefore, always do things that will not only be beneficial to them alone, but all of mankind. They are kind, considerate, helpful, sincere and most of all honest. That is why, freedom prevails in Ram Rajya.

It is my earnest desire to bring the rule of Ram in our lives. Day to day monitoring of our thoughts and deeds will get us there. So, we shall plod along while listening to the epic poem by Tulsidas the Ram Charitra Manas the way I understand it. He will be our beacon, who will describe to us in the end, the rule in Raghukul, the real Ram Rajya!! Maybe our Ram Rajya by then, will be akin to the real one!!! Who knows?

Continuing with our story, king Vedeha(Janak) thanked his lucky stars while beholding the feet of the sage Vishvamitra. The two brothers, one fair and the other dark in hue delighted the king, in fact, they were as if, the delight of delight itself. The king declared to the sage, how the two brothers had this guileless love that could not be defined, and they complimented each other as Brahman (the Supreme Being) and Jeeva (the individual soul) The king could not stop gazing at the Lord while his heart overflowed with joy and the hair on his body stood on end.

Extolling the virtues of the sage and bowing at his feet, king Janak brought him and the two brothers to his capital. Finding a beautiful and comfortable palace, the king lodged them there. After taking care of all their needs and paying homage to the sage, the king returned to his own palace.

Lord Shri Ram and His brother Lakshman dined with the sage, and then sat around, for the day was not done yet. JAI HO!

New Beginings

Well, it is high time I got to writing my blog- don't you think? I did go away on vacation to California for a while. That set in motion my procrastination, and a chain of events that threw me off completely. I suppose, summer can do that to you. Anyway, all I do know, is that this is my space, which gives me great comfort and solace. This is where Ram Rajya flourishes and this is where I am supposed to be.

Life is not simple by any means. It throws curve balls at you all the time and tries to suck you in. Every time one makes a step forward, it seems that one has to go backwards. So to find elation when one is despondent, one has to be in Ram Rajya. I cannot believe that I am saying this. But the fact of the matter is this. That, I am miserable, when I am away from my Ram Rajya which is right here right now. The more I dilly dallied, and postponed my commitment to this blog, the more unsettled I got. Today, it flashed to me, that my true calling is here. Here, where I can live, and breathe Ram Rajya. Here, where the grace of Ram always flows, one can take a dip and be refreshed. Here, is where His love permeates all, nobody is turned away or rebuked. Here is where we can put our burdens at the feet of Shri Ram and be assured that He will take care of them. Here, is where, one will not be judged, instead showered with good fortune. Here is where all prayers will be answered and nobody will ever be forsaken. This is Ram Rajya after all, we are in His domain.

I did not mean to be away from this Ram Rajya. It does however seems to be a blessing in disguise. It taught me a valuable lesson. The joy and peace that I received from writing about Ram Rajya was so immense that I could only imbibe, after staying away from it!

So, today their is not much else to say, but that, I am very happy and privileged to be back at what I do best- to tell the story of Shri Ram. I pray, that He blesses me and looks at me kindly, so that I can continue on with my journey.

I have said before, that Ram Rajya is not out there somewhere, but within our grasp at all times. When, while driving we have to change gears to reverse, go forward or ascend , similarly in life we have to make shifts, when the time demands. We can choose to be sad or we can change that gear and be in Ram Rajya. That is what I did today. I am so happy that I rediscovered my very own Ram Rajya! JAI HO!

King Janak Visits Vishvamitra

King Janak prostrated in front of Vishvamitra, swami of all the munis, who blessed him profoundly. Right then, the two princes, who had gone to see the surrounding gardens, walked in.

Very handsome, one fair, the other dark, the two young men looked very pleasing to the eyes, and could easily charm the whole world.

All, who had accompanied the king, became enamoured with Raghuvir and His brother. Tears of joy were flowing down their cheeks, while their bodies were charged with excitement. Watching, the sweet endearing image of Ram, King Janak lost all sense of time and place.

With great fervour and emotion the king asked of the muni,"Oh Divine sage, are these two siblings, the ornaments of your monkdom, or are these two, the keepers of a royal kingdom? Or, is it possible, that these two are' Brahman' in tandem, of whom the Vedas have sung about saying neti, neti (not this, not this)? My mind, that is detached by nature, is fascinated by their sight. Pray, please tell me who are they, do not hide anything from me. After seeing them, I have lost my equilibrium, and fallen in love with them."

Then Vshvamitra answered," Oh king, you are absolutely right! How can you be wrong. All the human beings of this universe, adore Him". Hearing the muni's mysterious indication, Ram smiled to Himself, and in His own way indicated to the muni, not to reveal anything further. The
muni then, said to king Janak that, these gems are of the Raghukul/dynasty. Their father, King Dushruth, had put them in his trust, for his good. These two brothers are the house of beauty, knowledge and strength. The entire world knows, that they are the ones who, protected his yagnas/ sacrificial ceremonies from the demons!!

Our lives are so enriched, that , we hardly even realize it!! We must make an attempt to count the numerous blessings, that we have been showered upon. Today, lets find time to be witness to them, and then, we will be in Ram Rajya. JAI HO!!

Kaavya

For sometime now, I have been diligently writing my blog everyday. But, as all good things come to an end, their has been an ebb, in the flow of my continuity. For all those, who look forward to my musings I offer my apologies. I will endeavour to keep the flow going, and in no way bring this, to an end for a very long time.

I am in sunny California for three weeks, visiting my nephew
Sidharth, who has been blessed with the most adorable baby girl with a scintillating smile. She has the most beautiful name 'Kaavya'. It seems to me, as if, she represents the epic, that I am writing about, for the meaning of the name as I understand it, is a tome of a long poem. That is exactly what the Ram Charitra Manas of Tulsidas is. This revelation came to me today as I was putting my thoughts together. Life works in strange ways! To think, all this time, all I was doing was looking for inspiration, while inspiration was staring at my face all along!! Thank you Kaavya I will forever be grateful to you.

I am enjoying the balmy breeze, the swaying palms, the lush as well as the brush covered mountains in and around L A . Both of
Kaavya's parents Sid and Kanika, have been very gracious hosts. To be amongst them, my sister Rashmi and my Jejajee Avtar is like icing on the cake. Lazy afternoons with good food, good company in this summer month seems to be a divine calling .

The trip to
Laguna beach was extra special for me, as Arjun was also here for a couple of days. Cool beers, on the rooftop restaurant of Montage resort hotel, overlooking the Pacific ocean were very refreshing. The next trip was promptly planned for the following week, when my other favourite nephew Rajat would be here from India.

We have this tradition in our family, that whenever we go to an enchanting place, we resolve to meet at the same venue, with the rest of the members of our family. So Arjun, we have to come back with
Suni, Ruchi and Dad very very soon!!

How unfettered, unblemished, pure with gay abandon, having implicit trust, very calm, with not many needs, very easily pleased is this little being called
Kaavya? Maybe, I am here, because I have an opportunity to see this new creation of God, and understand how truly beautiful life is and how in Ram Rajya we can keep it that way. JAI HO!

Janakpur

Chale Ram Lachiman Muni Sanga
Gaye Jahan Jug Pavani Ganga

Accompanied by the sage, Shri Ram and His brother Lakshman, came to the banks of the celestial river ganga, whose waters purify the whole universe.

The son of Gadhi, the sage Vishvamitra narrated the legend about how this celestial river came to the earth. Then, the Lord along with other rishis and munis took a dip in the holy river. All the Brahmans received different kinds of gifts as is the custom.

It was time to proceed onwards, and soon the two brothers escorted by the sage Vishvamitra, reached the outskirts of the city named Janakpur. They were charmed by the grandeur of the city. Their were numerous unique ponds, lakes, rivers with nectar like water flowing through them. To access these, their were gem studded stairs going down.

Beautiful gardens, glorious lawns and deep woods that were home to beautiful birds and trees were part of the scenery of this, spread out city. Monarch butterflies drunk with the sweet scent of flowers were dancing around in circles. Lotus flowers were blooming in all colors imaginable, Birds were chirping while the wind had a mild sweet air to it.

The beauty of this city of Janakpur was unparalled. No matter where one looked, the gaze got stuck. The marketplaces were laden with various wares, and one of a kind courtyards were carved out of precious stones, as if Brahma had made them with his own hands. Long winding lanes were seeped in aromatic fragrance, while the intersections had been decorated with festoons.

Their, seemed to be a strange calm and serenity in the houses, whose architecture was beyond description. The residents, men women and children, were all beautiful, pure, religious knowledgeable and talented. The palace of Janak, the king, was so luxurious that even the devtas were jealous. The fine artistry that went into the terracotta of the palace, depicted as if the beauty of the entire universe, was captured in it.

The windows of this well lit palace had these sheer drapes, made out of gold foil, that were emblzoned in gems. Next to the main palace was an annex which housed the princess Sita.

All the gates of the royal palace were strong as steel, while the doors were studded in diamonds. Crowds of fledgling artists, petty kings, and vendors were hanging around these gates. The vast grounds were full with horses and elephants. Many strong men, ministers and army chiefs had their own small cottages in these grounds.

Lot of camps were set up for small rajas, near the suburbs, where the rivers and lakes were flowing. Just near one of these sites, the sage Visvamitra located a mango grove. Finding this place suitable on all accounts, he asked the two royal princes to set up camp, with other munis and sages.

When the king heard that the sage Vishvamitra had arrived in town, he decided to pay him a visit. As always, we shall carry on another day to see if the king went to visit.Wonder, what this stage is being set up for, can you guess?

In Ram Rajya, we not only pay attention to our moral and spiritual needs, but great emphasis is laid on our environment. When we read about the beauty of Janakpur, we should make sure that we make our habitats clean and lovely, then surely, we will have Ram Rajya! JAI HO!

Ahilya

"Due to a curse by Gautam, her consort, this lady Ahilya, turned into a slab of stone. She awaits your arrival patiently," said the sage, "so that the dust from your lotus feet, will get her human form back. Oh Lord! of the kingdom of Raghus, please show mercy on her"

As soon as the Lord's feet that drive away sorrow, slightly touched her, Ahilya emerged looking every bit austerity, itself. With folded hands and a full heart she beheld Ram. Tears were running down her cheeks as she stood there speechless. She fell at His feet and feeling so blessed, started singing the praises of the lord. She asked to be saved, for she had taken refuge in Him, while being so impure. Ahilya tried to tell Ram that she considered herself lucky, for if not for Gautam's curse, she would not have met Him. So, she implored Ram, to give her no other boon but, let her mind, forever love the feet of the Lord, just like the bee that sucks the honey from a lotus. She kept praising Shri Hari, how he had put the same foot on her head, that from which the holy river Ganga flows, and Shive bears on his head. Thus, having praised Shri Hari in numerous ways, and falling at His feet, over, and over again Ahilya took her leave. With a joyous heart, she went to her husband's abode.

Tulsidas says, that Shri Hari is a friend of the meek and the humble. His compassion, knows no bounds. So do not be foolish, and be wrangling in petty matters. Just adore Him. Be in Ram Rajya! JAI HO!

Ram Slays The Demons Mareech And Subahu

The next day at dawn, the Lord said to the sage to perform his sacrifice as usual, but with no fear. All the sages got together, and started offering oblations to the holy fire, while Shri Ram Himself , guarded the area.

Mareech the demon, a big foe of the sages, upon hearing about the sacrifice, rushed furiously with his forces. Shri Ram aimed a headless shaft that struck him, as he fell eight hundred miles away, even beyond the sea shore. Next, the Lord took care of Subahu, with an arrow of fire, while His younger brother Lakshman, took down a host of other demons. All the Brahmans got rid of their fear, after Shri Ram killed the demons; then the whole contingent of sages and seers sang the praises of the Lord.

The two brothers, stayed on for a few days, keeping everybody very happy. The Brahmans in their devotion, narrated stories from the Puranas, not comprehending that the Lord was the fountain of all knowledge.

One day, the sage asked Shri Ram to go and witness a bow sacrifice. So happily, the brothers accompanied the holy sage. While on the way there, they came upon a deserted ashram. Not even a bird, a beast, or any other living creature could be seen around. Upon seeing a slab of stone, lying on the ground, Shri Ram enquired of the sage. Then, he told Him the whole story, which of course will have to wait for another day. Till then live in bliss, that is Ram Rajya! JAI HO!

The Demoness Tarka Gets Salvation

While walking alongside Visvamitra, one could admire Shri Ram's reddish eyes, a broad chest and long thin arms. The dark colour of his body was as the blue lotus or even as the blue tamala tree, A yellow sash was tied around His waist, a quiver hung on His back, His hands held a set of bow and arrow.

Vishvamitra thought to himself, how lucky could he get, to get the two boys, one fair the other dark. Just for him, to help the devtas and the Brahmans, the lord had left His own father.

The demoness Tarka, hearing them on the way, scurried up in a rage. As soon as the sage pointed her out to the Lord, with a single shaft, He ended her life. Recognising, that the demoness deserved compassion, the Lord bestowed upon her His ultimate grace.

Even though, Ram is acknowledged as the fountain of knowledge, Vishvamitra imparted to Him a sacred formula that would arm Him against hunger pangs, thirst and endow Him with vigor and strength. After handing over the cachet of weapons he had, Vishvamitra took the boys to his hermitage, and lovingly offered them, bulbs, roots and fruits to eat. The sage, had found true friends!

Our Lord Ram, is a compassionate Lord. He knew that Tarka had been harrassing the devtas, and not letting them complete their sacriftces. Even then, after putting an end to her miserable existance, He sent her to His abode. Our task is veryt simple, have no doubt, just ask him for deliverance and then be in Ram Rajya! JAI HO!

Happy Canada Day/ July 1

Upon hearing the most unpleasant request, the king's heart started fluttering and the blood drained from his face. He said that he had been blessed with his four sons, when he had ripened in years, therefor, the sage had not put any thought in his unreasonable request.

"Ask me for land, wealth, cattle , or goods,"said the king, "and I will gladly give them to you, in an instant. Nothing is more valuable than one's life, and Iwill give that up in a flash. All my four sons are dear to me than life itself, but in no case can I spare Ram, honorable sage. Those demons are such monsters, while my sons are still very young and fragile, and are no match to them."

The very wise hermit Vishvamitra, was touched with the tender love that the king had for his sons. However, he pleaded his case, till the time the king understood, the grave situation that the demons had created and, how his sons could help the sage.

The King lovingly called his two sons; hugging and putting them close to his bosom, he offered some fatherly advise. Then turning to the sage the king reminded him, that the sons were his life itself, and from then on, he would be their only father.

After blessing them, the king, handed over the charge of his sons, to the sage. Bidding adieu to their respective mothers, the two heroes who were lions among men, a sea of compassion. resolute of purpose, and the ultimate cause of the whole universe, set out to free the sage of all his fears.

Sometimes, for a greater cause, one has to make tremendous sacrifice. We see, how the king is so reticent, in letting his sons go out of his sight, to help Vishvamitra in his dilemma. But then he relents, fot the good of the sage. For Ram Rajya we should be ready and willing, to let go, so that we can let God.!!

Happy Canada Day, Happy Ram Rajya! JAI HO!

Vishvamitra's Rrequest

When the king heard, that the sage Vishvamitra was paying him a visit, he along with a host of Brahmins went outside to greet him. The king prostrated on the floor in reverence, before bringing him inside and seating him on his own throne. Then, the king, giving him the utmost respect, by washing his feet, declared what an honour it was for him, and their was no person more blessed than him. Delicious food was served to the sage. All this honour and service was a big delight for him.

The king summoned his four sons, to come and pay obeisance at the sages feet. The sage was struck with awe at the beauty of Shri Ram, just like a chakore (a bird) gets enamoured at the sight of the full moon.

With a pure and happy heart, the king eventually asked the sage how he had graced him, for he had never done that before. If. he had anything in mind, that he could help him with, then he would take care of it, without any delay. The sage replied, how the demons had been tormenting him for a while. Therefore, he had come to ask the king for a favour. If the king would let him take the two princes, Ram and Lakshman, who can kill the demons, then he (the sage ) would feel secure.

Dehu Bhoop Mun Hurchith Tajahun Moha Agyan

Dharm Sujus Prabhu Tumah Kaun Inha Kahain Ati Kalyan

"With a cheerful heart entrust your two sons to me Oh king! Let no love or ignorance stop you. Religious merit and renown will be yours, while your sons will be forever blessed."

What was the king's reply, as well as his reaction, will of course, be a part of another day's discussion. Today, we learn from the king's reception of Vishvamitra, that we should always be very good hosts. One never knows when, and in which form, we might have a chance meeting with God. He might just visit your house one day! Live in Ram Rajya until then! JAI HO!

The Sage Vishvamitra

Along with his brothers and his friends Shri Ram would go to the forest for hunting everyday. He would only kill holy game, then He would come back to the palace, and show off His kill, to the king. Those animals that were hunted down by Shri Ram, undoubtedly, went straight to heaven.

Shri Ram would have his meals with his mates and brothers, He was very obedient to his parents. He always had a trick up His sleeve to entertain the people of the city. Daily, He listened to the Vedas and the Purans, then, He expounded the truths their in, to His brothers. He was up at dawn, after bowing to His parents and Guru and taking their permission, He would attend to the affairs of the city. All this, made the king very pleased.

The all pervading Lord , who cannot be divided, has no desires, is pure bliss with no flaws, no name, and is formless, was performing these noble acts for the satisfaction of His followers.

Yagyavalk Muni tells Bhardwaj to pay attention, and listen attentively to the rendition of the story as it continues.

Thinking it was a safe and sacred haven, a great enlightened sage named Vishvamitra, lived in this forest. Daily, he practiced his jap/chanting, yog/contemplation and performed sacrifices. He was however, deeply sacred of the demons Mareech and Subahu, for as soon as a sacrifice was done, they would come and desecrate it. This would greatly upset the hermit, who thought, that the only person who could destroy the demons, was Shri Hari.

Vishvamitra already knew that Shri Hari had taken birth, to relieve the burden of this earth. It was a good idea the hermit thought, to make the outrage of the demons as an excuse, to go and see the Lord's feet, and also make a plea, to bring the two of the brothers back with him. He can then, also feast his eyes on Him, who is the house of all knowledge , dispassion and virtues.

So, with lots of preparation and great enthusiasm, the sage reached his destination, in very little time. First, he bathed in the Sarju river, then, he made his way to the royal court.

In good times, as the playmates had, with their buddy Ram, or in bad times as that of Vishvamitra, the common thread that prevails, is Shri Ram. Thus, in our pursuit of a Utopia, the common thread must be Shri Ram, then, we will be in Ram Rajya! JAi HO!

Chilfdhood Of Shri Ram

Shri Hari delighted his subjects by playing all kinds of pranks with them. When the four brothers grew out of infancy, the churamani ceremony was performed by the guru. The Brahmins received substantial presents for officiating in the ceremony. The family was always amused to see the princes' frolicking, and could not comprehend, that the Lord who has no beginning or end is playing in Dashrath's courtyard. When, His father called Him to eat dinner, He would not listen but at His mother's beckoning, He would waddle away. He, whom the Vedas have not figured out, and Shiva is unable to gauge, that Lord is being forcefully brought back by his mother. Besmirched in dirt, the king gladly picks Him up! With His mind set on play, He would run away hither and thither, while eating, with yogurt and rice all stuck on his face.

The most endearing childish pranks of Ram have been sung by the Vedas, Sarasvati, Shiva and Shesh the lord of the serpents. (I might add that we are doing that too!) Those who do not enjoy in these, are begotten and are missing a lot. As soon as the brothers attained boyhood the Guru and the parents did their thread ceremony/Janayo(induction of a Brahmin)

Gurugrah Gayey Parahan Raghuraee

Alp Kaal Vidhya Sub Pahyee

When it was time to go to school, Guru Vashista came to the palace and took all the four brothers to his ashram, for their education. In a very short time they mastered all the different branches of knowledge.

(I have a story to tell about this Chaupai/couplet. You might remember, Sarkar Swami who I have introduced in the beginning. He initiated my family into the study of the Ram ChiritraManas. Well, he was of the opinion, that this epic had the recipe for everything. According to him, if one studied, and then, passed an exam what was the big deal? I would not encourage you to go that far, studying is first and foremost in my books . However I will say that, if you want to do well in education related matters, you must put the above couplet to memory. It will definitely help you in your endeavour, you will most certainly achieve success. All of us in our family knows it by heart, and use it when need be. Good luck!)

It is strange that Shri Hari, whose breath, is a symbol of all the four Vedas had to go to study. Highly proficient in the art of learning, with perfect manners, virtuous and polite, the brothers played different games, even acted as if they were kings. The brothers, with bows and arrows in their hands, gladdened the hearts of the whole creation, both animate and inanimate. When the brothers passed any street while playing , the folks stood spellbound in awe. Truly, those living in Ayodhya, young and old, were dearly in love with the gracious Ram.

Education is a part of our daily lives. No matter how old one is, no one is ever too old to learn! So, learning is a very vital part of Ram Rajya. To make things a bit easier, we have a tool that will help us in our learning. I implore you to memorise the above Chaupai and then you will be in Ram Rajya! JAI HO!

Mystries Of The Universe

The Lord was in a mood to show His mother, His eternal Supreme form. Each pore in His body had millions of universes, dwelling in them. Countless suns, moons, Shivas, Brahmas, numerous mountains, plains, oceans, rivers, woods, spirits of time, spirits of action, the modes of the body (rajas, tamas and satwa) different types of knowledge and nature. The mother was witness to things, that she had never even seen before.

Kaushlya saw the mighty Maya folding her hands and standing in front of the Lord, with fear in her eyes. Then, their were the embodied souls who danced at the tune of Maya, but their was Bhakti too, who was ready to free those souls from the claws of Maya.

After seeing that remarkable phenomenon, the mother's body started shaking and tears started streaming down her eyes. Seeing His mother's state, the enemy of the demon Khur, Shri Ram, assumed His childlike form. At this stage the mother bowed at His feet and prayed. She was not sure, how, she had dared to consider the father of the universe, as her son. Shri Hari, however, pacified her in several ways, then, convinced His mother not to breath a word of what she saw to a soul. The mother in turn, begged Him, to never bring her, into the spell of His Maya again.

In Ram Rajya we are privy to untold mysteries. On top of that, we are forever waiting to unravel the mystery of the next day!! Enjoy this feeling of suspense in Ram Rajya! JAI HO!

The Bliss Of Motherhood

This is how, Ram, the father and mother of the whole universe, charmed the people of Ayodhya. Shiva illustrates to Bhavani/Parvati that those who have devotion for the feet of Shri Ram, are always duly rewarded by Him. On the contrary, no matter how hard they might try, those who are averse to the Lord, can never be liberated from their mercenary existence.

Maya/illusion who has under her sway, all the living beings, both animate and inanimate, shivers in front of the Lord when He plays her with His eyebrows. Those people who give up everything for the love of the Lord, in mind, word, and action, will never be forsaken by Him. So, how can we not worship Him?

Each day, was a delight. The mother enjoyed her bliss, while the Lord performed his many pranks. Sometimes, she would rock Him in her arms or in the cradle.Days and nights trickled by, without her notice. She was rapt up in singing to Him and loving Him!!

One time, mother Kaushilya gave Shri Ramcandrji a bath and then put him down in the cradle for a nap. Then, she went to take her bath, so that she can pray to the family's isht dev (god assigned to the family) After her puja/prayer the mother offered the nayvedyas (nine offerings of cloves, beetle nuts, cardamoms, food etc) and then went to the kitchen. When she came back to the prayer room, she saw her little son eating the food that she had offered to her god. Befuddled, the mother thought to herself, she had just put her son down for a nap, how is he here, ran to his room to find him sleeping in His crib!! Scuttling back to the prayer room she saw Him still eating. By this time the mother had shivers running down her spine, disbelieving her eyes. She thought to herself, she had seen two boys here and there, is she dreaming or is something wrong with her? Seeing His mother so scared , Shri Ramchandra smiled.

What happens next, we shall have to wait and see! When we read/hear this segment of the Ram Charitra Manas, we are taken back memory lane, remembering our own childhood. Mothers have played such an important part in our lives, somehow Sri Ram is pointing us to that. Why don't we try and bring those moments back? Instead of just treasuring them, let us try to revive those glorious moments, and make them part of our daily lives. Then, we will have Ram Rajya! JAI HO!

The Beauty Of Shri Ram

Ram's dark complexion looked like a blue lotus or a nimbus cloud, surpassing the beauty of millions of Kamdevs/cupids.Nails, shone on his red lotus like feet, as if pearls were glistening on the petals of a red lotus. The soles of the feet had marks of a flag, while the tinkling of the anklets sent the sages into rapturous glee.

His belly, had three perfect folds, encircled by a beautiful girdle with tiny bells. The depth of the navel could only be fathomed by those, who saw it. Long arms had beautiful ornaments on them, on his breast hung a rare tiger's claw . The exquisite necklace studded with precious gems and a diamond locket with a Brahmin's footprint, rattled one's mind.

(The story about the footprint goes like this. Once, their was a discussion amongst the sages, as to who was the greatest of the trinity; Brhma, Vishnu or Mahesh. So Brahma's son Brihgu was assigned to visit the three divinities and figure out . As he, very arrogantly went, first to his father, Brahma, he enraged him for not bowing to him and giving him respect. Some how he got out of their unscathed. Then Brighu made his way to Kailash to see Shiva who greeted him with open arms. Brighu riled him up instead, by saying how he had defied social convention, and disrespected the Vedas. Shiva almost came to blows with Brighu, somehow he contained himself by the intervention of Parvati. Finally, Brighu went to Baikunth, where Vishnu was resting in his chambers. Without any announcement Brighu rushed in, and somehow stomped his foot on Vishnu's chest. Vishnu got up , rushing to Brighu, to find out if he was alright. Since then, Vishnu has Brighu's footprint on his chest. It stands as a mark of honour and as a monument of His forbearance. )

The neck of the baby is curvaceous with three prominent lines, while the chins beauty is out of this world. The face looks so resplendent as if millions of cupids have combined their beauty there. With red lips and two baby teeth dangling in his mouth, He is truly beauty personified!!

The ears are sharp and cheeks are full, as he lisps and takes every one's breath away. The curly ringlets in his hair, are still not cut, so that the mother has styled them. In a yellow frock, He crawls on His hands and feet and looks so cute.Even the Vedas and Puranas have not been able to fully describe His beauty; only those maybe, can talk, who have dreamt about it.

One who is an ocean of happiness, and above and beyond any measure, knowledge, speech and sensuous perception, that same Lord because of His boundless love is playing in the courtyard of Dushruth and Kaushilya.

It is said, that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, only this time, we get to behold beauty as it were! I consider myself fortunate, to be able to talk about the beauty of Him who is beauty personified! So, behold beauty, be beauty and spread beauty all around you, and then we will be in Ram Rajya!JAI H

Nam Karan Sanskar/Name ceremony

"Your sons have many a name" said Guru Vashishta to the king," and each one is distinct. But, I will name them appropriately, according to my thinking. The eldest, who is a sea of bliss and embodiment of ecstasy, whose one atom alone can send the three lokas into delight, will be named Rama, the home of joy and in whom the whole world reposes.

Vishva Bharan Poshan Kar Joee

Takar Nam Bharat Us Hoee

The second son who is the sustainer and supporter of this universe, will be called Bharat, while his name, whose thought alone annihilates one's enemy, the Vedas announced that, will be Satrughna" Finally, the source of virtuous traits, Ram's favourite and the support system of the entire universe, was given the name of Lakshman by Guru Vashishsta.

The Guru had named the four sons of king Dushruth after giving it much thought. He told him that all the sages considered Ram their treasure, He was everything to His devotees and for Shiva He was his life. However, right then the guru said that Ram took pleasure in playing.

Lakshman from the beginning became very attached to Ram. He considered Him his benefactor and master. His true devotion lay at Ram's feet. Profound love existed between the two half brothers, Bharat and Satrughna also, as if in a master and son relationship.

The mothers always gazed at the loveliness of the two pairs, one dark and the other fair. To avert any evil eye, they would break a blade of grass now and then. Even though, all the four brothers were the picture of perfection, politeness and goodness, yet Ram was the epitome of bliss. The moon shone in his heart of elegance, while his smile resembled it's rays. Fondling, Him sometimes in her lap and then in the cradle, He, was his mother's sweetheart.

Talking about the love of the mothers, then amongst the brothers, gives us an insight to Ram Rajya. Not only must we forget our day to day quarrels amongst ourselves, we must rise above all that and send love to humanity at large. Surely then we will have Ram Rajya! JAI HO!

Ruchira and Prashant's Wedding Anniversary!

A very happy wedding anniversary to Ruchira and Prashant.I cannot believe three years have gone by! Lots of happiness to you both!
This is a good time for me to congratulate
Ruchi on her new job as well . All this while, I was waiting for the appropriate time, and finally it came today. It is great that you are representing your country Ruchi, and having fun doing it. I wish you, the very best in your future endeavours. You have done us proud.

On with our epic!!
Not one person noticed the strange phenomenon that happened. Ultimately, realising how long he had stayed, the sun moved, while singing the praises of of the Lord as he went along. All the gods, sages and the nags congratulated one another on their good fortune, for witnessing such a spectacle, and then they went home.

Shivji confessed to Parvati, because she had such a steadfast faith, that he had to tell her about a covert act, that he and Kakbhusund did. Shiva informed her, that both the sage Kakbhusund and him were there, at the time of birth of the Lord, in human form. With elation and joy filled hearts, they both roamed the streets , taking in all the spirit of the festivities, no one even noticed. Shivji added that, only those who have been graced by Shri Ram can be told of that adventure.

The benevolent king on that occasion gave forth from his heart, and fulfilled every one's wishes, how so ever they came. Horses, elephants, chariots, gold, cows diamonds clothes of all kinds were distributed. When satisfied, they bestowed blessings on the sons, for their long lives, and praised that One, who was the Lord of Tulsidas.

Some time elapsed, soon it was time to names the children.
Dushruth again, summoned the wise guru Vashishta. The king respectfully bowed to him when he came, and asked him to name the sons according to what he had in mind.

Let us see, what the guru names the children. By the way , did you notice how the sun forgot to move and their was day light for a month? That is the type of bliss that is needed, when all else is forgotten. Even time stops in Ram
Rajya! JAI HO!
