Vishvamitra's Rrequest

When the king heard, that the sage Vishvamitra was paying him a visit, he along with a host of Brahmins went outside to greet him. The king prostrated on the floor in reverence, before bringing him inside and seating him on his own throne. Then, the king, giving him the utmost respect, by washing his feet, declared what an honour it was for him, and their was no person more blessed than him. Delicious food was served to the sage. All this honour and service was a big delight for him.

The king summoned his four sons, to come and pay obeisance at the sages feet. The sage was struck with awe at the beauty of Shri Ram, just like a chakore (a bird) gets enamoured at the sight of the full moon.

With a pure and happy heart, the king eventually asked the sage how he had graced him, for he had never done that before. If. he had anything in mind, that he could help him with, then he would take care of it, without any delay. The sage replied, how the demons had been tormenting him for a while. Therefore, he had come to ask the king for a favour. If the king would let him take the two princes, Ram and Lakshman, who can kill the demons, then he (the sage ) would feel secure.

Dehu Bhoop Mun Hurchith Tajahun Moha Agyan

Dharm Sujus Prabhu Tumah Kaun Inha Kahain Ati Kalyan

"With a cheerful heart entrust your two sons to me Oh king! Let no love or ignorance stop you. Religious merit and renown will be yours, while your sons will be forever blessed."

What was the king's reply, as well as his reaction, will of course, be a part of another day's discussion. Today, we learn from the king's reception of Vishvamitra, that we should always be very good hosts. One never knows when, and in which form, we might have a chance meeting with God. He might just visit your house one day! Live in Ram Rajya until then! JAI HO!

The Sage Vishvamitra

Along with his brothers and his friends Shri Ram would go to the forest for hunting everyday. He would only kill holy game, then He would come back to the palace, and show off His kill, to the king. Those animals that were hunted down by Shri Ram, undoubtedly, went straight to heaven.

Shri Ram would have his meals with his mates and brothers, He was very obedient to his parents. He always had a trick up His sleeve to entertain the people of the city. Daily, He listened to the Vedas and the Purans, then, He expounded the truths their in, to His brothers. He was up at dawn, after bowing to His parents and Guru and taking their permission, He would attend to the affairs of the city. All this, made the king very pleased.

The all pervading Lord , who cannot be divided, has no desires, is pure bliss with no flaws, no name, and is formless, was performing these noble acts for the satisfaction of His followers.

Yagyavalk Muni tells Bhardwaj to pay attention, and listen attentively to the rendition of the story as it continues.

Thinking it was a safe and sacred haven, a great enlightened sage named Vishvamitra, lived in this forest. Daily, he practiced his jap/chanting, yog/contemplation and performed sacrifices. He was however, deeply sacred of the demons Mareech and Subahu, for as soon as a sacrifice was done, they would come and desecrate it. This would greatly upset the hermit, who thought, that the only person who could destroy the demons, was Shri Hari.

Vishvamitra already knew that Shri Hari had taken birth, to relieve the burden of this earth. It was a good idea the hermit thought, to make the outrage of the demons as an excuse, to go and see the Lord's feet, and also make a plea, to bring the two of the brothers back with him. He can then, also feast his eyes on Him, who is the house of all knowledge , dispassion and virtues.

So, with lots of preparation and great enthusiasm, the sage reached his destination, in very little time. First, he bathed in the Sarju river, then, he made his way to the royal court.

In good times, as the playmates had, with their buddy Ram, or in bad times as that of Vishvamitra, the common thread that prevails, is Shri Ram. Thus, in our pursuit of a Utopia, the common thread must be Shri Ram, then, we will be in Ram Rajya! JAi HO!

Chilfdhood Of Shri Ram

Shri Hari delighted his subjects by playing all kinds of pranks with them. When the four brothers grew out of infancy, the churamani ceremony was performed by the guru. The Brahmins received substantial presents for officiating in the ceremony. The family was always amused to see the princes' frolicking, and could not comprehend, that the Lord who has no beginning or end is playing in Dashrath's courtyard. When, His father called Him to eat dinner, He would not listen but at His mother's beckoning, He would waddle away. He, whom the Vedas have not figured out, and Shiva is unable to gauge, that Lord is being forcefully brought back by his mother. Besmirched in dirt, the king gladly picks Him up! With His mind set on play, He would run away hither and thither, while eating, with yogurt and rice all stuck on his face.

The most endearing childish pranks of Ram have been sung by the Vedas, Sarasvati, Shiva and Shesh the lord of the serpents. (I might add that we are doing that too!) Those who do not enjoy in these, are begotten and are missing a lot. As soon as the brothers attained boyhood the Guru and the parents did their thread ceremony/Janayo(induction of a Brahmin)

Gurugrah Gayey Parahan Raghuraee

Alp Kaal Vidhya Sub Pahyee

When it was time to go to school, Guru Vashista came to the palace and took all the four brothers to his ashram, for their education. In a very short time they mastered all the different branches of knowledge.

(I have a story to tell about this Chaupai/couplet. You might remember, Sarkar Swami who I have introduced in the beginning. He initiated my family into the study of the Ram ChiritraManas. Well, he was of the opinion, that this epic had the recipe for everything. According to him, if one studied, and then, passed an exam what was the big deal? I would not encourage you to go that far, studying is first and foremost in my books . However I will say that, if you want to do well in education related matters, you must put the above couplet to memory. It will definitely help you in your endeavour, you will most certainly achieve success. All of us in our family knows it by heart, and use it when need be. Good luck!)

It is strange that Shri Hari, whose breath, is a symbol of all the four Vedas had to go to study. Highly proficient in the art of learning, with perfect manners, virtuous and polite, the brothers played different games, even acted as if they were kings. The brothers, with bows and arrows in their hands, gladdened the hearts of the whole creation, both animate and inanimate. When the brothers passed any street while playing , the folks stood spellbound in awe. Truly, those living in Ayodhya, young and old, were dearly in love with the gracious Ram.

Education is a part of our daily lives. No matter how old one is, no one is ever too old to learn! So, learning is a very vital part of Ram Rajya. To make things a bit easier, we have a tool that will help us in our learning. I implore you to memorise the above Chaupai and then you will be in Ram Rajya! JAI HO!

Mystries Of The Universe

The Lord was in a mood to show His mother, His eternal Supreme form. Each pore in His body had millions of universes, dwelling in them. Countless suns, moons, Shivas, Brahmas, numerous mountains, plains, oceans, rivers, woods, spirits of time, spirits of action, the modes of the body (rajas, tamas and satwa) different types of knowledge and nature. The mother was witness to things, that she had never even seen before.

Kaushlya saw the mighty Maya folding her hands and standing in front of the Lord, with fear in her eyes. Then, their were the embodied souls who danced at the tune of Maya, but their was Bhakti too, who was ready to free those souls from the claws of Maya.

After seeing that remarkable phenomenon, the mother's body started shaking and tears started streaming down her eyes. Seeing His mother's state, the enemy of the demon Khur, Shri Ram, assumed His childlike form. At this stage the mother bowed at His feet and prayed. She was not sure, how, she had dared to consider the father of the universe, as her son. Shri Hari, however, pacified her in several ways, then, convinced His mother not to breath a word of what she saw to a soul. The mother in turn, begged Him, to never bring her, into the spell of His Maya again.

In Ram Rajya we are privy to untold mysteries. On top of that, we are forever waiting to unravel the mystery of the next day!! Enjoy this feeling of suspense in Ram Rajya! JAI HO!

The Bliss Of Motherhood

This is how, Ram, the father and mother of the whole universe, charmed the people of Ayodhya. Shiva illustrates to Bhavani/Parvati that those who have devotion for the feet of Shri Ram, are always duly rewarded by Him. On the contrary, no matter how hard they might try, those who are averse to the Lord, can never be liberated from their mercenary existence.

Maya/illusion who has under her sway, all the living beings, both animate and inanimate, shivers in front of the Lord when He plays her with His eyebrows. Those people who give up everything for the love of the Lord, in mind, word, and action, will never be forsaken by Him. So, how can we not worship Him?

Each day, was a delight. The mother enjoyed her bliss, while the Lord performed his many pranks. Sometimes, she would rock Him in her arms or in the cradle.Days and nights trickled by, without her notice. She was rapt up in singing to Him and loving Him!!

One time, mother Kaushilya gave Shri Ramcandrji a bath and then put him down in the cradle for a nap. Then, she went to take her bath, so that she can pray to the family's isht dev (god assigned to the family) After her puja/prayer the mother offered the nayvedyas (nine offerings of cloves, beetle nuts, cardamoms, food etc) and then went to the kitchen. When she came back to the prayer room, she saw her little son eating the food that she had offered to her god. Befuddled, the mother thought to herself, she had just put her son down for a nap, how is he here, ran to his room to find him sleeping in His crib!! Scuttling back to the prayer room she saw Him still eating. By this time the mother had shivers running down her spine, disbelieving her eyes. She thought to herself, she had seen two boys here and there, is she dreaming or is something wrong with her? Seeing His mother so scared , Shri Ramchandra smiled.

What happens next, we shall have to wait and see! When we read/hear this segment of the Ram Charitra Manas, we are taken back memory lane, remembering our own childhood. Mothers have played such an important part in our lives, somehow Sri Ram is pointing us to that. Why don't we try and bring those moments back? Instead of just treasuring them, let us try to revive those glorious moments, and make them part of our daily lives. Then, we will have Ram Rajya! JAI HO!

The Beauty Of Shri Ram

Ram's dark complexion looked like a blue lotus or a nimbus cloud, surpassing the beauty of millions of Kamdevs/cupids.Nails, shone on his red lotus like feet, as if pearls were glistening on the petals of a red lotus. The soles of the feet had marks of a flag, while the tinkling of the anklets sent the sages into rapturous glee.

His belly, had three perfect folds, encircled by a beautiful girdle with tiny bells. The depth of the navel could only be fathomed by those, who saw it. Long arms had beautiful ornaments on them, on his breast hung a rare tiger's claw . The exquisite necklace studded with precious gems and a diamond locket with a Brahmin's footprint, rattled one's mind.

(The story about the footprint goes like this. Once, their was a discussion amongst the sages, as to who was the greatest of the trinity; Brhma, Vishnu or Mahesh. So Brahma's son Brihgu was assigned to visit the three divinities and figure out . As he, very arrogantly went, first to his father, Brahma, he enraged him for not bowing to him and giving him respect. Some how he got out of their unscathed. Then Brighu made his way to Kailash to see Shiva who greeted him with open arms. Brighu riled him up instead, by saying how he had defied social convention, and disrespected the Vedas. Shiva almost came to blows with Brighu, somehow he contained himself by the intervention of Parvati. Finally, Brighu went to Baikunth, where Vishnu was resting in his chambers. Without any announcement Brighu rushed in, and somehow stomped his foot on Vishnu's chest. Vishnu got up , rushing to Brighu, to find out if he was alright. Since then, Vishnu has Brighu's footprint on his chest. It stands as a mark of honour and as a monument of His forbearance. )

The neck of the baby is curvaceous with three prominent lines, while the chins beauty is out of this world. The face looks so resplendent as if millions of cupids have combined their beauty there. With red lips and two baby teeth dangling in his mouth, He is truly beauty personified!!

The ears are sharp and cheeks are full, as he lisps and takes every one's breath away. The curly ringlets in his hair, are still not cut, so that the mother has styled them. In a yellow frock, He crawls on His hands and feet and looks so cute.Even the Vedas and Puranas have not been able to fully describe His beauty; only those maybe, can talk, who have dreamt about it.

One who is an ocean of happiness, and above and beyond any measure, knowledge, speech and sensuous perception, that same Lord because of His boundless love is playing in the courtyard of Dushruth and Kaushilya.

It is said, that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, only this time, we get to behold beauty as it were! I consider myself fortunate, to be able to talk about the beauty of Him who is beauty personified! So, behold beauty, be beauty and spread beauty all around you, and then we will be in Ram Rajya!JAI H
O!

Nam Karan Sanskar/Name ceremony

"Your sons have many a name" said Guru Vashishta to the king," and each one is distinct. But, I will name them appropriately, according to my thinking. The eldest, who is a sea of bliss and embodiment of ecstasy, whose one atom alone can send the three lokas into delight, will be named Rama, the home of joy and in whom the whole world reposes.

Vishva Bharan Poshan Kar Joee

Takar Nam Bharat Us Hoee

The second son who is the sustainer and supporter of this universe, will be called Bharat, while his name, whose thought alone annihilates one's enemy, the Vedas announced that, will be Satrughna" Finally, the source of virtuous traits, Ram's favourite and the support system of the entire universe, was given the name of Lakshman by Guru Vashishsta.

The Guru had named the four sons of king Dushruth after giving it much thought. He told him that all the sages considered Ram their treasure, He was everything to His devotees and for Shiva He was his life. However, right then the guru said that Ram took pleasure in playing.

Lakshman from the beginning became very attached to Ram. He considered Him his benefactor and master. His true devotion lay at Ram's feet. Profound love existed between the two half brothers, Bharat and Satrughna also, as if in a master and son relationship.

The mothers always gazed at the loveliness of the two pairs, one dark and the other fair. To avert any evil eye, they would break a blade of grass now and then. Even though, all the four brothers were the picture of perfection, politeness and goodness, yet Ram was the epitome of bliss. The moon shone in his heart of elegance, while his smile resembled it's rays. Fondling, Him sometimes in her lap and then in the cradle, He, was his mother's sweetheart.

Talking about the love of the mothers, then amongst the brothers, gives us an insight to Ram Rajya. Not only must we forget our day to day quarrels amongst ourselves, we must rise above all that and send love to humanity at large. Surely then we will have Ram Rajya! JAI HO!

Ruchira and Prashant's Wedding Anniversary!

A very happy wedding anniversary to Ruchira and Prashant.I cannot believe three years have gone by! Lots of happiness to you both!
This is a good time for me to congratulate
Ruchi on her new job as well . All this while, I was waiting for the appropriate time, and finally it came today. It is great that you are representing your country Ruchi, and having fun doing it. I wish you, the very best in your future endeavours. You have done us proud.

On with our epic!!
Not one person noticed the strange phenomenon that happened. Ultimately, realising how long he had stayed, the sun moved, while singing the praises of of the Lord as he went along. All the gods, sages and the nags congratulated one another on their good fortune, for witnessing such a spectacle, and then they went home.

Shivji confessed to Parvati, because she had such a steadfast faith, that he had to tell her about a covert act, that he and Kakbhusund did. Shiva informed her, that both the sage Kakbhusund and him were there, at the time of birth of the Lord, in human form. With elation and joy filled hearts, they both roamed the streets , taking in all the spirit of the festivities, no one even noticed. Shivji added that, only those who have been graced by Shri Ram can be told of that adventure.

The benevolent king on that occasion gave forth from his heart, and fulfilled every one's wishes, how so ever they came. Horses, elephants, chariots, gold, cows diamonds clothes of all kinds were distributed. When satisfied, they bestowed blessings on the sons, for their long lives, and praised that One, who was the Lord of Tulsidas.

Some time elapsed, soon it was time to names the children.
Dushruth again, summoned the wise guru Vashishta. The king respectfully bowed to him when he came, and asked him to name the sons according to what he had in mind.

Let us see, what the guru names the children. By the way , did you notice how the sun forgot to move and their was day light for a month? That is the type of bliss that is needed, when all else is forgotten. Even time stops in Ram
Rajya! JAI HO!

The Celebrations Begin

The news of the birth traveled fast. The other queens came running, followed by their ladies-in- waiting. Everyone was brimming with joy. When king Dashrath heard the enchanting news, he went into a trance as if he had become one with the Brahman. His body became numb with excitement, with great effort he tried to get up. He thought to himself that, whose name alone, gives solace, that Lord had come to his house. With profound joy in his heart the king called on his musicians to play their orchestra.

Guru Vashista was summoned with the tidings. He came, with several Brahmins and visited with the babe who's beauty defied description. The raja performed the Nandimukh Shrad (rituals performed on child birth) and donated gold, cows, clothes, precious stones to all the Brahmins.

Ayodhya was magnificently decorated. There were floral arches on gateways entering the city. The sky was showering flowers and the people were blissfully happy. Droves of women ran, with no attire, to see the new arrival. With decorated golden platters, carrying lot of festive articles, they entered the portals of the royal palace. With lamps, they swooned over the baby and did his aarti,(went round and round). Bards and minstrels sang praises to the Lord of the Raghus. At this time of happiness, the king gave out loads full of gifts, people who got those gifts did not keep them either. The small lanes in the city were muddied with saffron and sandal paste after all the merriment. All the houses were lit, music was playing, people were rejoicing, for the crux of splendour had manifested Himself.

Kekaiye and Sumitra had beautiful sons as well. Even Saraswati and the king of serpents, Sheshji, could not describe the happiness, the wealth, the time, the society at that time. The city of Ayodhya was shining as if the night had come to meet the Lord, but was abashed to see her Lord the sun there. Even then she decided to stay back as dusk. The smoke from the incense appeared as if it was the darkness of the evening and the coloured powder looked as if it was the redness of the setting of the sun. The gems studded on the palace walls looked like the stars while the pot on the dome of the palace was the crescent moon. The murmur of the chanting of the Vedas, was like the chirping of the birds. The involvement of the sun was so complete that he forgot to move, so that he stayed in Ayodhya for a whole month!. No one knew of this mystery. It was a long day for a month, so how could night fall?

We shall continue as always another time, meanwhile bask in the festivities of the moment. Let us all try to live in the bliss that the people felt when the Lord was born, then we will have Ram Rajya ! JAI Ho!

The Avatar is Born

When all the planets, astrological signs, the day of the week and the date aligned, the flaura and fauna came alive with joy. It was the ninth day of the sacred month of chaitra (a month in spring, according to the Hindu calendar), shukla paksh (that part of the month when the moon gets brighter) and Bhagwan's favourite abhijit mahurat (moon enters the right configuration). The sun was at its meridian, and it was not very hot nor cool. The time was peaceful for all.

Cool, mild, scented breezes were blowing. The devtas were happy and the munis were eager with anticipation. The hills and dales were blooming with flowers, while the chain of mountains were glittering with their precious gems and minerals. The rivers were flowing over with amrit (nectar)

When Brahma felt, that soon the Lord will appear, he along with the other devtas proceeded in their Arial transport (vimaan). Several groups of (celestial bodies) sang melodiously along with their drums, while showering rose petals. The naags/serpents, gundharvas, munis and devtas brought gifts for the new born and started singing hymns before returning to their abodes.

Then, the One who is the home of the whole universe, and who gives solace to this creation, the Supreme Lord Appeared.

Bhay Pragat Kripala Deen Dayala Kaushilya Hitkaari

Harshitmahatari Muni Mun Haari Adhbhut Roop Bechari

Lochan Abhirama Tanu Dhansyama Nij Aayudh Bhuj Chari

Bhushan Banmala Nayan Bisala Shobha Sindhu Kharari

One who shows kindness to the downtrodden , thinks the best for Kaushilya, the merciful Lord has appeared. One who runs away with the minds of munis, the mother is full of joy seeing His amazing beauty. He had a complexion like the dusty clouds which was very pleasing to the eyes. In His four hands He held his signature emblems, a conch shell, a lotus, a discus and a club. He wore a garland of sylvan flowers and ornaments around his neck. His eyes were large and dusky. That is how with lots of grandeur, the God who killed Khur, the demon manifested Himself.

Kah Duee Kar Jori Astuti Tori Kehi Bidhi Karon Ananta

Maya Gun Gyanateet Amana Ved Puran Bhananta

Karuna Sukh Sagar Sub Gun Aagar Jehi Gavahin Shruti Sunta

So Man Hith Laagi Jan Anuragi Bhayahun Pragat Shrikanta

With folded hands the mother asked, Oh seamless God !! How shall I pray to you? The Vedas and Puranas have called you as transcending maya, above attributes, beyond knowledge and beyond any measure. The rishis and saints call you an ocean of kindness, happiness and sing your praises . That same God, who loves his devotees and is the consort of Laxmi, has showed Himself for my good.

Brahmand Nikaaya Nirmit Maya Rom Rom Prati Ved Kahe

Mam Ur So Baasi Yaha Uphasi Sunat Dheer Mati Thir Na Rahe

Upja Jab Gyaana Prabhu Muskaana Charit Bahaut Bidhi Keenha Chahe

Kahi Katha Suhaee Matu Bhujaee Jehi Prakar Sut Prem Lahay

The
Vedas say that in every pore in your body their are thousands of worlds conjured up by this maya. The thought that you were in my womb, is funny, but disturbing for the still minds of the wise. When the mother found this new found knowledge, then the Lord smiled. He wanted to enact a lot of sportive acts . Thus, He showed her many scenes from her past life, so that she would adore Him like a son.

Mata Puni Boli So Mati Doli Tajahun Tat Yeha Rupa

Kejay Sisuleela Ati Priyasila Yeha Sukh Param Anupa

Suni Vachan Sujana Rodan Thana Hoee Baalak Surbhoopa

Yeh Charit Jo Gavahin Hari Pad Pavahin Teh Na Parahin Bhavkoopa

The mother's thinking changed, then she spoke again, "Oh son! leave this, and enjoy your childhood. It will be very joyous for me". Listening to his mother, the Swami of the devtas became childlike, and started crying. Tulsidas says that those people who sing this lay/ stuti of the Lord, attain Lord's abode, and get rid of the toils of existence.

The Lord took this Avatar for the sake of the Brahmins, cows, devtas and the munis. He is however, above all human foibles. He transcends Maya, and is above the three modes of Prakriti (creation) / Satva, Rajas, and Tamas , His body is formed on its own accord, and is above the reach of senses. He was born as a Man, out of His own free will.

Today, we glorify the Lord. The above
stuti/lay is sung on Ram Navami the day Ram was born. Do take some time to learn this, then you will live in Ram Rajya! JAI HO!

Happy Fathers Day

As you might have gathered by now, my father played a significant role in my life. Not realizing how he impacted my life, while I was growing up, I can certainly say now, that he has had a tremendous influence in my life. As a child I did not know what I had, but now every day I remember him, and wish I had thanked him for everything he had provided for me, both materially and spiritually. Mr. Ravindra Prakash Mathur, Dad, you have left an indelibly impression on my psyche. You are my role model, you were the best father and I pay tribute to you and I love you!!

At this time I will also pay tribute to my father-in-law, whom I loved dearly. Just like my father, he was a disciplined individual and I have great esteem and regard for him. He was very kind and generous to me. An I.A.S. officer, he was dedicated, loving and caring to his children and grandchildren. He was an avid Bridge player and I remember the fun times we had when all of us played together. I know not, if I ever said thank you to him, for lots of things, and for his son. So today, Mr. Santosh Kumar Chaudhri, Baba, I take this opportunity on Father's day to thank you and to say that I love you even though, you are not with us any more!!

Happy Fathers Day to all you Fathers out there!!! Remember, that your children are lucky to have you just like you are, lucky to have your Dads. Parents are irreplaceable, and I think the only time can tell that fully, is when they are gone forever!! So without sounding morbid, enjoy your Dads and feel lucky and proud that you have them. Thank them for who they are, and tell them that you love them, and then you will have Ram Rajya! JAI HO!

Bhringi Muni's Yagya

The thought that he did not have a son, was gnawing on Dashrath's mind. So, he promptly went to see his guru about it. The king knelt at his feet, and cried out all his woes. Guru Vashishta, assured the king that, there was nothing to worry about, he was going to have four sons, who would relieve every one's fear, as well as be renowned in all the lokas.

Bhringi rishi was summoned by Vashista, who was asked to perform the Putrakameshti (ceremony for having a son) yagya. With great faith in his heart, the rishi presented offerings to the sacrificial fire, and lo and behold, the lord of fire himself appeared, with rice pudding in hand. He went up to the king and said,"Whatever Vashishta muni had wished for you in his heart is going to come to pass. Now, go back, and distribute this rice pudding. You can give any proportions of this pudding to whomever you want."

The king was delirious with happiness and he called his beautiful queens right away. Dashrath gave half of the pudding to Kaushilya and then, with the remaining half he made two portions. The first portion he gave to his second queen Kekaiye. Now, with the remaining portion the king made another two parts, put one on Kaushilya's hand, the other on Kekaiyi's hand (as if taking their permission, also making them happy) and then, gave it to the third queen, Sumitra.

This is how, the three queens got pregnant. Each day their hearts sang out with joy and contentment. The day the Lord, Sri Hari entered the womb, all the Lokas were blessed, there was happiness and prosperity every where.

The queens faces were all glowing, there was a certain aura about them. All was well in the palace. Some time elapsed, and then it was time for the Lord to APPEAR!!

Rituals are a part of our culture. Most of us, see it happening in our homes everyday. In fact, I am proud to say, that the saying " monkey see monkey do " applies in our house. Arjun, Suni and Ruchi have made sure, that the tradition of doing Puja in the house continues without fail. Not only do they participate whenever they can , but they have developed their faith, and it has taken root. To see them well rounded in their lives, with their careers, education and religion, makes Surajit and me very proud!!

You all know, that the Lord is playful, and He will appear in his own time ! Meanwhile, start believing in the Lord and gaining faith, then we will have Ram Rajya! JAI HO!

The Promise

"Do not be scared any more, all of you Swamis of devtas and munis," said the voice from the heavens. "I will, take human form for you. In the veneered house of the sun ( Suryavansh) I will take birth along with my atoms. I had promised a boon, to Kashyap and Aditi, for their immense tap. They, in the form of Dashrath and Kaushilya, have been born as king and queen, of the human race, in Ayodhya. In their house, I will be the oldest of the four sons and an alter ego will be born with me too. I will bear the burden of the planet earth, oh great ones! so become fearless."

The voice of Brahm (God) put everyone at ease, and showing relief on their faces, the devtas went home. Brahma reassured the earth. She was now convinced that God would relieve her of her burden. Then, Brahma asked the devtas to prepare to take the form of monkeys, and be born on earth, to worship the Lord.

The devtas wasted no time, soon they changed their form into monkeys and came down to earth. They had a lot of strength and valour. Mountains, rocks and their nails were their only weapons. With calm minds, the monkeys (devtas in human form) spread out in jungles and mountains with small forces, and started waiting for God to appear.

Now, Shivji says to Parvati he will continue with the other story that was left in the middle.

Once upon a time, Ayodhya was ruled by the renowned king Dashrath who was the head of the Raghukul (clan). He was a champion of religion, very talented and wise. He was devoted to that God, who held the famous Sharang muni's bow and arrow. His mind was always at the feet of the Lord. His queens Kaushilya and the others were of good character and totally devoted to him and Sri Hari.

We see, that this God is a very benevolent God. He comes to our aid whenever we ask. There is no doubt in my mind that, it has happened to us several times. So now we know, that all we need to do is holler and He will be there. Then we will have Ram Rajya. JAI HO!

The Hymn

Jai Jai Surnayak Jan Sukhdayak Pranatpal Bhagwanta,

Go Dwij Hitkari Jai Asurari Sindhusuta Priyakanta,

Paalan Surdharni Adhbhut Karni Maram Na Janahi Koyee,

Jo Sahaj Kripala Deendayala Karahoon Anugraha Soyee
Brahma along with the devtas munis and the planet earth, sang fervently: Oh! How To Find God!!

As Ravan's power grew, all kinds of evil activity flourished. Instead of respecting the elders, the saints, and the sadhus, on the contrary they were made to serve the rakshas' clan. Shivji in an aside to Parvati, said that people, who have such kind of bad attributes, must be considered to be rakshas at all times.

Feeling the assault on religion, the earth became traumatized and fearful. She realized that she could bear the weight of the mountains, oceans and rivers, but she could not tolerate one person rending the whole world asunder. Still, she could not muster up enough courage to say something to Ravan.

Finally, after much thought, in the disguise of a cow, the earth went to those devtas, who were taking shelter in the caves, and cried her heart out to them. As they were already peeved, and had nothing to offer, all the devtas, munis and gundharvs (celestial bodies) decided to go to Brahma in Satyalok, along with the grief stricken earth. Brahma was expecting them, but, had no solution to their problems either. However, he advised the earth to pray to Shri Hari who was the caretaker of all, for help.

Confusion set in, in their group. They wondered, whether to go to Baikunth/heaven or to Shaishnag (snake) in Sheersagar (ocean) to find Shri Hari to make their request for help.

Jaakey Hridayan Bhagati Asi Preeti

Prabhu Tahain Pragat Sada Tehin Reeti

Whatever kind of bhakti/devotion or love people have for the Lord, He meets them there, in that same tradition.

Shiva was also present in that group of the earth, devtas and munis so, he said to them, that he had something in mind. He told them that he knew for sure that, God is Omnipotent, there is no direction, country, place or time where He is not. He is conquered with love alone, enough to make Him present Himself. Just like fire, which is present everywhere, only a flame can ignite it, similarly God is Omniscient and pure love will make Him appear.

Brahma exclaimed "Sadhu, Sadhu" (true, true) praising Shiva when he heard what he had to say. He was very excited with Shiva's solution. With tears streaming down his cheeks, hair standing on end, with folded hands Brahma started invoking the lord, by singing a hymn.

To bring this scene into perspective, I am reminded of my father, who had a great love for Shri Hari. I can say that with conviction because we used to witness his love for the Lord very frequently. Every morning, before my father went to office, he would go for a morning walk. After a shower, he would sit in meditation in the Puja/prayer room, facing the river Ganges which flowed below our house (it was on a hill). During this meditation (which lasted for an hour or so) we could see Daddy in blissful ecstasy. Very often, we could see his face would be gleaming, with tears flowing down his cheeks. I have this indelible image of him, forever etched in my memory, and my siblings will corroborate this fact. He sat on a deer skin which was spread on a takhat, (hard settee) he wore a dhote (a cotton wrap) and his chest was bare. At this time no matter the Chairman of the company called, my Dad was unavailable. Soon enough people knew, and they did not disturb him at that time. That is the power, God bestows on his true devotees! As soon as he was done, he would get ready in his suit in a flash, have his breakfast of fresh cheese, juice, almonds, porridge and then his chauffeur would drive him to his office.

There are other instances of his divinity, which I promise, I will write about later on. For now, it is sufficient to say, that my family was blessed to see his devotion to God, with their own eyes. Hence, my urge to you today, is, to have that kind of passion for God that my father had, and then we will have Ram Rajya. JAI HO!

Evil Spreads

One day, while he was sitting in his assembly, Ravan eyed his huge family of warriors, children, grandchildren, family members, and the different tribes of rakshas' who were countless in number. Seeing his army, the proud Ravan incited the rakshas' to fight against the devtas, as they were their enemies. He told them to go and disrupt their religious ceremonies. When they got hungry and weak, the devtas will come and join them, and then, he would kill them all, or keep the devtas in his servitude forever.

Ravan summoned his son Meghnath and urged him to fight the devtas, tie up the brave ones and bring them back, to him. Getting the army prepared for war, got Ravan excited. With a mace in hand Ravan moved, the earth shook, and when he bellowed, women miscarried their unborn children. When the devtas heard Ravan was coming, they fled, to hide in the caves of the Sameru mountain.

Ravan was on a power trip. He went around in a drunken stupor, roaring like a lion, hurling curses at the devtas for their cowardice. Looking for a valiant warrior just like himself, Ravan traveled the world, but found no match. Meanwhile he struck terror in all the three Lokas amongst the devtas , humans, vegetation and the animal kingdom. Even the five elements, the sun and the moon were affected by him. He let nobody sit at ease, so much so that everybody was under his control. Due to his might, he won over all the other kingdoms and started ruling everybody with a tight grip.

Ravan married many beautiful women and daughters of devtas, humans and other species of the different Lokas. His son Meghnath was very dutiful to his father, and performed all tasks asked of him, even before he was asked. Meanwhile, the ugly, sinful rakshas' were harassing the devtas. No religious ceremony like yagyas, brahmin bhojan (feast), shrad (ceremony for the dead), etc. could be performed due to their interference. Religion was at it's lowest ebb. No one believed in devtas, brahmins, or gurus. Not even in their dreams, did anybody listen to Vedas or Puranas. Ravan made sure that there was no religious activity in the land. If he heard that some ceremony was going on, he personally went there to disrupt it, kill the devtas or throw them out of the country. Crime had reached it's prime, and the rakshas' had spread evil far and wide.

Surely the stage was being set for something. How would the earth get rid of all this evil. Of course we shall see! Until then live in Ram
Rajya. JAI HO!

Ravan Settles In Lanka

May, another reputed rakshas, brought his gorgeous daughter Mandodari to meet Ravan. He somehow, knew that Ravan would be their king one day, so May made sure he was nicely positioned. Ravan was very happy to get a good woman by his side, and soon he got his two brothers married.

In the middle of the ocean, there was an enormous fort on top of Trikut mountain. The danav/rakshas May who was also adept in illusions and workmanship, redecorated the fort with several golden palaces, emblazoned with precious stones.

Just as in Patal lok (underground) the clan of snakes have a capital named Bhogavati, and Lord Indra, has Amravati puri/capital in Swarg lok (heaven). However, this fort was far superior and beautiful. It was renowned in the world as Lanka. It had a deep moat encircling it, and also had a gem studded dome, so stunning, that words could not describe it. Due to the grace of God, in every era, whoever was extremely powerful and courageous, that king of the rakshas, along with his army, got to reside in the capital.

It is said, that giant rakshas' lived in that puri, before they were killed by the Devtas. Then, through Lord Indra's persuasion, one hundred thousand (bodyguards) yakshas/nature spirits of Kuber (God of wealth) started living there. Ravan had got wind of this place, so he gathered an army and attacked the fort. The Yakshas fled with their lives . After surveying the city Ravan fell in love with the place, and found it ideal and safe to set up house. By distributing homes according to their abilities, Ravan made all the other Rakshas' satisfied.

On one occasion Ravan attacked the kingdom of Kuber, and won the Pushpak Viman (aero-plane) from him. Another time just in play, he went and lifted Mount Kailash, as if proclaming to the world how mighty he was. Each day his wealth, his happiness, his fame , his army, his sons, his valour, his knowledge, grew by leaps and bounds, just like how greed grows every time one makes a profit.

Ravan's brother Kumbhkaran was so mighty, that he had no equal in the whole world. He would sleep for six months after drinking alcohol. The three Lokas would shudder when he woke up. He had an enormous appetite. He was however a great warrior, just like several others in Ravan's army.

Meghnath was Ravan's oldest son, who again was so talented in fighting, that nobody could face him in war. Even the Devtas were afraid of him. In addition Durmukh, Akampan, Vajradant, Dhamketu, and Atikaya were other yodhas/warriors in Ravan's army, who could easily win the world by their individual might. They were all versed in the supernatural and could create illusions and change their forms at will.

Do not be deceived by this pomp, and remember that we are talking about these evil rakshas'. After all this is a setup for a mighty fall. Lucky for us, we have nothing to worry about !!! We live in Ram Rajya!! Jai Ho!!!

Brahma's Boons

Bharadwaj Sunu Jahi Jav Hoee Vidhata Vaam

Dhuri Marusum Janak Jum Tahi Vyalsum Daam

Yagyavalk has some profound advise for Bharadwaj muni. He says that when God is not on one's side then, even a small thing will take huge proportions. Sand will become like the Sameru
mountain (something heavy that can crush you!) a father can become like Yama (God of death) and a rope will appear like a snake that will bite you!!

However, continuing with the story, that same king Prakatapbhanu and his entire clan, was born as a rakshas named Ravan. He was a mighty warrior who had ten heads and twenty hands. His younger brother Arimardan was born as Kumbhkaran, a pillar of strength. The minister Dharmruchi was born as Pratapbhanu's younger step brother, Bibhishan, who was well versed in the sciences and was a Vishnu bhakta. All the sons and the workers of the king were born as scary rakshas. Not only did they have no morals, but they were criminals, thieves, heartless killers who could change their forms whenever they wanted, creating terror and pain in the whole world. In spite of being born in the lineage of Pulusth Rishi, due to the shrap/curse of the Brahmins, their acts were sinister.

Nonetheless, the three brothers took upon themselves to do rigorous tap/penance.
Bramha was very pleased with their hard labour, and came to see them and said, 'Sons, I am pleased, ask for a boon".

Ravan was the first to ask. He wished his death at the hands of a man or monkey, and no body else. Shivji says, that he, along with Brahma seeing his great fervor, granted Ravan that boon.

Brahma was really surprised when he went to see Kumbhkaran. He thought to himself, that if this huge monster of a rakshas ate daily, he would put the planet upside down. So Brahma influenced Saraswati (Goddess of knowledge) to change Kumbhkaran's thinking. Therefore, he asked to sleep for six months every year.

Gayee Bibhishan Paas Puni Kaheyou Putra Var Maang

Tehin Mageyou Bhagwant Pudh Kamal Amal Anuraag

Then Brahma went to Bibhishan and asked him to ask for a boon. He asked for unflinching and everlasting love at the feet of Shri Ram.

Think before you ask, and you will always be in Ram Rajya. Do you think that Ravan thought out his boon? Maybe he did, we shall see. JAI HO!
