Manu's Supreme Sacrifice

Manu and Satrupa were in a quest to see the Almighty. So, they started off their tap/penance by eating vegetables, fruits, roots, and taking the name of Sachidanandan Bramha. Then, they started doing tap for Shri Hari by having water alone . With the hope that they will see, the One who is Supreme, boundless, and whom the Vedas call Neti Neti (not this, not this) one day with their own eyes.

After drinking water for six thousand years, they lived on fresh air for seven thousand years. For ten thousand years they gave up air too, when they decided to stand on one leg. Seeing their immense sacrifice, Bramha, Vishnu, and Mahesh came to them several times, to entice them into giving up their penance and asking for a boon. The king and queen were very adamant though and did not get swayed. By now however, they looked like a bag of bones , only their heart was strong and they felt no pain.

The Omniscient Lord saw their relentless devotion and firmness to their cause, and recognized them to be His servants. One day this sweet voice rang out in the sky telling the Raja and Rani to ask for a boon.When they heard the voice coming through their ears to their hearts, that could even raise the dead, their bodies became fresh and rejuvenated as if they had just left home.

Manu was ecstatic and prostrated himself on the ground. His heart was pounding with joy as he said, "Oh Lord, even Bramha Vishnu and Mahesh fall and pray at your feet, you give true happiness to all, you take care of the downtrodden and you are the Swami of all this vegitation. If you love us, then please give us the pleasure of seeing that image of you that is forever instilled in Shiva's heart. That image that is inside Kakbhusund, that Nirgun and Sagun which the Vedas have sung about and the sages dream about night and day. Oh, Lord you are the One who takes away all the misery for those who come at your feet, please bless us that we can see you with our own eyes."

As soon as the Lord heard Manu's and his wife's pleading , He who always comes to the aid of His devotees , never lets them down, and permeates the whole universe, APPEARED.
